August has arrived, and with it comes one of our favourite weeks of the year.
From 1–9 August, South Australia celebrates Buy SA Week — nine days dedicated to the products, produce and people that make this state what it is. It’s a celebration of local, and honestly, it’s right up our alley.
We’re obviously biased. We’ve built our whole business on South Australian oysters, grown in South Australian waters, by South Australian hands. But Buy SA Week isn’t really about us. It’s about something bigger: the simple, powerful idea that where you choose to spend your money actually matters.
And as far as we’re concerned, there’s no more delicious way to back your own backyard than a dozen fresh oysters.
What Buy SA Week Is All About
Buy SA Week is Brand SA’s annual celebration of everything made, grown and created right here in South Australia — and the people behind it all.
Across nine days, there are pop-up activations, tastings, giveaways, discounts and competitions happening all over the state. The whole point is to shine a light on local: to give you a reason to sample something new, rediscover an old favourite, and think for a moment about the makers behind the brands you love.
It’s a week of sampling, sipping, saving and winning. But underneath all the fun, there’s a genuine message — when we choose local, we all win. The producer, the community, the state, and (let’s be honest) your dinner table.
What “South Australian” Really Means on the Half Shell
When we say our oysters are South Australian, we don’t mean it as a marketing line. We mean every single step.
Our oysters grow in the cold, clean waters of the Eyre Peninsula — some of the most pristine oyster-growing country on earth. They’re tended by local growers who’ve spent years, sometimes generations, learning to read the tides and coax the very best out of every shell. From there, they travel a short, careful journey to reach you: shucked, sorted, packed and delivered by a small local team who genuinely care how they turn up.
Compare that to a tray of imported oysters that’s crossed oceans and sat in cold storage for who-knows-how-long, and the difference is obvious the moment you taste it. Local isn’t just a feel-good story. It’s fresher, cleaner and better — because the water they came from was practically next door.
Why Buying Local Actually Matters
Here’s the thing about buying local: it does more than you’d think.
When you order a dozen SA oysters, your money doesn’t disappear into some faceless supply chain on the other side of the world. It stays here. It backs the grower on the lease, the family behind the farm, the coastal towns that depend on the industry, and the small team packing your order. Every local purchase is a little vote of confidence in the people doing the work.
It’s better for the product, too. A shorter supply chain means fresher oysters, less time in transit, and a business that’s accountable to the very community it serves. We can’t hide behind distance. If an oyster isn’t up to scratch, we hear about it — and we fix it.
That’s the quiet power of Buy SA Week. It’s a reminder that a small choice, made often enough, adds up to something that keeps South Australia thriving.
Build a Properly South Australian Spread
If you really want to lean into the spirit of the week, why stop at oysters?
South Australia is spoiled for incredible local produce, which means you can put together an entire spread that never left the state. Start with a dozen (or three) of our oysters as the centrepiece. Add a crisp local sparkling or a cold-climate riesling to pour alongside. Grab some cheese from a local maker, a fresh loaf from a nearby bakery, and whatever seasonal fruit is looking good at the market.
Suddenly you’ve got a table full of South Australian flavour, made by South Australian hands — and a very good excuse to invite a few people over. That’s Buy SA Week in a nutshell: good local food, good local drops, and good company to share it with.
Bonus points if you can name the growers behind everything on the board. Double bonus if the oysters go first.
Our Buy SA Week Offer
We couldn’t let the week pass without joining in properly.
To celebrate Buy SA Week, every dozen oysters you order online from 1–9 August automatically earns you an entry into our prize draw. The more you order, the more chances you have to win — simple as that.
One lucky winner will take home a Pacific Oyster Co prize pack worth $205: a hoodie, a tee, a cap, an engraved oyster shucker, and a bottle each of our Mandarin Ponzu and Hot Sauce. Everything you need to eat, shuck and rep local in style.
So if you were looking for a sign to order a few dozen this week — this is it. Back your local growers, stock up on the good stuff, and maybe win yourself a prize while you’re at it.
Buy SA Week only rolls around once a year, but the idea behind it never goes out of season. Choosing local is one of the easiest good things you can do — and when it tastes like a fresh SA oyster, it barely feels like an effort at all.
So this August, back your backyard. We’ll bring the oysters.
Local waters. Local hands. Local legends. That’s worth celebrating.
Oyster Regards,
Will & the POCo team 🦪
